  1. 1. What is the length of distal convoluted tubule in adults?

    • (A) 8 mm
    • (B) 5 mm
    • (C) 12 mm
    • (D) 2 mm
    Show answer

    (B) 5 mm. The distal convoluted tubule, which stas at the macula densa, is about 5 mm long. Its epithelium is lower than that of the proximal tubule, and although a few microvilli are present, there is no distinct brush border. The distal tubules coalesce to form collecting ducts that are about 20 mm long and pass through the renal coex and medulla to empty into the pelvis of the kidney at the apexes of the medullary pyramids. Brooks (Eds), Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology, 24e.

  2. 2. Which is not an extrapyramidal tract?

    • (A) Tectospinal tract
    • (B) Reticulospinal tract
    • (C) Rubrospinal tract
    • (D) Coicospinal tract
    Show answer

    (D) Coicospinal tract. The axons of neurons from the motor coex that project to spinal motor neurons forms the coicospinal tracts. The ventral coicospinal tract does not cross the midline until it reaches the level of the spinal cord at which it terminates. Lateral coicospinal tract neurons make monosynaptic connections to motor neurons, especially those concerned with skilled movements.Ref: Ganong's Review of Medical Physiology Twenty-Third Edition

  3. 3. Major regulator of interdigestive myoelectric complexes

    • (A) VIP
    • (B) GIP
    • (C) Neurotensin
    • (D) Motilin
    Show answer

    (D) Motilin. C i.e. Motilin - Glucagon derivative GLP- 1 (7-36) amide (most potent) > gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP) also known as glucose -dependent insulinotropic polypeptide >> gastrin, CCK, secretin and glucagon stimulates insulin secretionQ. But only GLP-1 (7-36) amide & GIP stimulate insulin secretion when adminstered in dose that produce blood levels comparable to those produced by oral glucose. - Motolin is secreted by entero chromaffin cells & M0 cells in stomach, small intestine and colon during fasting. It is released cyclically (so 1' ed levels) at intervals of 90- 100 minutes in a fasted person which stimulates waves of gastrointestinal motality called myoelectric interdigestive cmplexes (MIC). Erythromycin binds to motolin receptors so its derivatives may be of value in treating decreased intestinal motality. - Neurotensin is produced by neurons & cells of ileum. Its release is stimulated by fatty acid and it increases ileal blood flow and inhibits gastro intestinal motality. - GIP is produced by K cells in mucosa of duodenum & jejunum. Its secretion is stimulated by glucose & fatQ in duodenum. It is named so because in large doses it inhibits gastric secretion & motality. However in small dose (that are seen after meal) it does not have significant gastric inhibitory activity.
